A Farewell to Childhood
Published in Waking October Leaves, 1993.
In tender days of golden hue,
Innocence pure and skies so blue,
I roamed through meadows, free and wild,
A child of wonder, undefiled.
But shadows lengthen, years they bend,
As childhood's end draws near, my friend,
The world in new and complex light,
Yet still, I hold to dreams so bright.
The laughter fades, the days grow old,
Yet memories warm, like stories told,
In twilight's glow, we find our way,
To honor youth's departing day.
In grace, we say adieu, farewell,
To childhood's dreams, the magic spell,
For though we leave those days behind,
In our hearts, the child we find.
